The West Tisbury Library Foundation, Inc. was established “to promote and advocate for the expansion, improvement, maintenance and support of the library buildings, collections, programs and services of the West Tisbury Free Public Library.”
The Library Expansion Program
Following its incorporation in 2010, the West Tisbury Library Foundation’s immediate challenge was to raise the private capital needed to complete the Library expansion program. Private matching funds were required to secure both state grant monies and the vote of town funding. The Foundation raised and donated to the town over $2 million in donations from individuals, family and other foundations, and local granting organizations, which combined with other funds to enable the new Library to open its doors in the spring of 2014.
The Work Continues
Moving forward, the Foundation continues to raise money to support the buildings, collections, programs and services of the West Tisbury Free Public Library. Our immediate funding priorities are:
Programs
Our library is not only a source of reading and entertainment materials, but also the center of vital community activities and services that edify, enrich, and bring together town and Island residents and visitors. The expanded library can now serve the community with a richer variety of cultural, educational, and public affairs programs. Donated funds help the library present high-quality guest speakers, performances, and exhibitions.
Equipment and Training
Funding is needed to continually update digital equipment, renew the children’s room and train the staff in state-of-the-art information science.
Maintain Landscaping
Funding is needed to maintain the handsome gardens and terraces that beautify the grounds, link them to the adjacent homes and the Field Gallery, and protect the adjacent Mill Stream watershed.
Prepare for Future Growth and Change
We expect to be happy in our new building for many years to come, but inevitably funds will be needed to adapt to population growth and changes in technology and community needs. The Foundation seeks to build an endowment fund that will meet the future demands of the Library.
